Throughout the last decades, time traveling fascinated people all over the world. Many movies and books were made about the topic. Even scientists believe that, in theory, time traveling is possible. People like to believe that there is a way to go back in time and undo things that went wrong or do things they think they missed out on. Therefore time traveling will always be interesting and inspire the minds of writers everywhere.

The scientific theory of time traveling is difficult to understand for a non-scientist. But since Einstein’s ideas scientists believe that it could be possible. Of course until today there is no proof of it but many scientist are working on the project time traveling all over the world. Every country wants to be the first to be able to travel in time. Therefore the research turned into some kind of a competition.

Going back in time and changing bad things or stopping things from happening has always been a dream of mankind. Looking back lots of mistakes have been made and people like to think there might be some way of changing it. But until time traveling becomes real this will only be a dream and people have to deal with their own guilt.

Movies like to teach their viewers that everything that changes in the past has an effect on the present. Even small things like leaving modern technology behind, is considered to have a huge impact on the future. This makes the movie interesting but until now it can not be proven right or wrong. Also movies teach that the big events in history should not be messed with. Today’s society would be completely different. The reason for this is that the movie makers want to teach the audience that the past is there to learn. Without learning from the past the same mistakes would be made over and over again.

Time traveling will always inspire people’s dreams and wishes. They will also always be interested in movies and books about the topic. But nobody can tell at this point if it will be possible in the future.

Before the mechanical clock was invented people used sundials and water clocks to tell the time. Especially sundials were very precise, but they were not made for traveling and needed to be reset every time before using them on a journey. Therefore people were looking for a different kind of clock, which would be both, precise and easy to transport.

Galileo made the earliest design for a mechanical watch. Although he had papers and sketches for a mechanical watch, the scientist never actually built a prototype. Therefore Christiaan Huygens is considered the inventor of the mechanical watch. In 1656 he built the first prototype of a mechanical clock. He created a watch which kept time from the vertical movement of a pendulum. But the clock was not very accurate because of the pendulum growing and shrinking over the day. The growing and shrinking was caused by the rising and falling temperature throughout the day. The pendulum therefore moved slower or faster making the clock inaccurate. In 1721 George Graham improved Huygens designed by compensating the changes in the pendulum. With this improvement the accuracy of the clock was within a second of each passing minute.

Another problem was the friction of the pendulum causing inaccuracy. In 1761 John Harris improved the design of the clock once more reducing the friction of the mechanic clock. He used wheels built into the clock and solved the problem. In 1898 R.J. Rudd improved the design again introducing a so called slave-master-system. The slave pendulum gave the master pendulum a push to keep its movement consistent. The constant push reduced friction and temperature inaccuracy. It also improved regularity.

Today’s clocks use a different system – they keep track of time on an atomic level. Atomic clocks use electron pulse waves, which are emitted by the electron on a regular basis. The intervals never use regularity due to friction or temperature changes. Today’s clocks are highly accurate and always keep the right time. But nobody knows what kind of improvements might be made in the future. Maybe today’s clocks will be considered to be inaccurate after all.

Humans were always interested in determining time. Therefore the first clocks were invented in ancient times. But unlike today’s clocks they were not mechanical or electrical. The so called sundials were used by the Romans, the Greeks, the Egyptians and other cultures. Artifacts of sundials were found all over the globe. The length of the shadow cast by the sun was used to determine time.

In 9 BC Emperor Augustus built a giant sundial, which was made of a 30 m high Egyptian obelisk. The scale was almost 200m in diameter. Other examples of sundials from ancient times were found in houses in Pompeii, which were preserved by the lava of the volcano. Portable watches were also known in ancient Rome and Egypt. In the first century BC, such viatoriapensilia were described by the Roman engineer Vitruvius. These sundials were carried along on trips and hung on strings or rings to tell the time.

Sundials of this kind were in use until the second half of the Mid Ages. Then, more accurate sundials were invented. In the 16th century linen-based sundials were built in Nuremberg and Augsburg. Many engineers, inventors and writers dedicated some of their work on sundials. Therefore some papers and books about building sundials still exist and engineers all over the world are still fascinated by the accuracy with which these sundials work. The sundials of this time had a built-in compass to make setting it in the right position easier.

Even more accurate sundials were built in the 17th century. The hollow sundials displayed at least two surfaces at the same time. As a result a compass was not needed anymore. In this century sundials made of bronze, silver and ivory were very popular. But still, people were only able to tell the time at the exact moment they were looking at the sundial. When time zones were introduced sundials lost their meaning to society and new kinds of watches were invented. Mechanical watches could be set to different times and were therefore much more practical than sundials. Today nobody is carrying around a sundial anymore. The requirements simply changed.

Time is not only something which can be measured it is also very highly valued. Every human being only has a certain amount of time left on earth. To spent time wisely is therefore very important. Wasting time on anger or frustration is considered foolish but there are still many people doing just this.

Spending time on work is important because everybody needs money to live and one has to be useful to society. Spending the right amount of time on work is also very healthy. Studies show that people who do not work on a regular basis are more likely to suffer from depression than people who do. But one should not live to work, one should work to live. Spending too much time on work can be health damaging too, because people who work too much are likely to suffer from burn-out-syndrome and other stress related illnesses.

Spending time with loved ones should be the most important part of life. Nobody knows what happens the next day. Building up a healthy relationship to others makes people happy and gives ones life meaning. It is especially important to spend time with the family. A strong bond within a family can help overcome any kind of problems or misfortunes. Having no family and no close friends can make people miserable. They need other people to talk about problems and share happy moments.

Spending time on hobbies is also important because it is time spend on oneself. Everybody needs time to himself occasionally. The time is used to think about problems or to relive happy memories. Many people like making crafts, reading or doing sports. Doing sports is considered healthy and helps to get a clear head. Sports fans say that they can run off problems, clear their head and can come up with a good solution.

Spending the right amount of time on every part of ones life is important but it is also very difficult. Nobody can tell exactly how much time should be spent on work, loved ones or hobbies. The trick is to find the right balance.

Being able to tell the time is very important to today’s society. Therefore every member of the society owns at least one kind of clock or watch. But most of the time people own much more than just one kind only. People are surrounded by watches everywhere and every day. Nobody should lose track of time.

The watch is one of the most common watches and nearly everybody owns one. Different designs and colors make every watch unique. It is supposed to satisfy the owners need for being individual. Prices for watches may range from very low to very high. Some watches can cost the same money as a small car. Therefore watches are not just timepieces they are also a status symbol. Being able to afford a luxury watch shows people around one his wealth.

Pocket watches became fairly rare in today’s society but just a few decades ago most people owned one. Today people who love antiques own a pocket watch and some people who inherited one might too. But in every days life one won’t see much of them.

A stop watch is very common, too. Many wrist watches have a stop watch included. Their main use in every day’s life is for sports and cooking. In sports one needs to be fast, even faster than others. Therefore time needs to be measured to compare one’s own performance with other people’s. While cooking every dish needs his own cooking time. To not forget about it a stop watch is set. For example for boiling eggs being able to tell the exact time is very important.

An alarm clock is also one of the most common ones. It wakes one up in the morning and makes sure that no important appointments will be missed. A hundred years ago people did not need an alarm clock because they would get up at sunrise and would sleep after sunset. But today’s society does not care about sunrise or sunset. Lots of people need to work at night or very early in the morning. Therefore they need an alarm clock to wake them up. That’s how times can change!

Time is a rather abstract term and can be defined in many different ways. Time can be measured in seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years. Although being able to measure it people still do not know how to characterize it. Enjoyable moments seem to fly by, but moments of suffering or discomfort seem to last forever.

While growing up, the definition of time changes. At a young a waiting for a birthday or Christmas to come up seems to take forever. But at the same time, while playing and discovering the world, every day passes rather quickly. Grown up and looking back on those days one wonders where the time has been. Everything passed so quickly and one wishes to go back in time to enjoy childhood again. In the adult life time seems to be running. Every day passes quicker than the day before. One has to sit back and enjoy the moment otherwise he misses out on his whole life.

It is said that we will get over misfortunes and unhappiness over time. It is supposed to heal wounds left by others. But determining exactly how long a wound takes to heal is impossible. In this manner time is nothing objective, because everyone feels different and therefore everyone needs a different amount of time to heal. Some people grieve over a loss of a loved one even after decades not being able to move on. Other people just need a few months to be overwhelmed with grief and afterwards they are able to continue their lives.

Time is also valued as a resource in today’s society. “Time is money!” Who has not heard this sentence before? Lives are built around a strict schedule and time dictates people’s everyday life. Planning and organizing seem to overtake most of the day. People, who are not able to sit back and enjoy their life, are often unhappy and at a certain point they realize that they have wasted their time on planning instead of living. Most of the times it is too late for them to change things then. Therefore one should enjoy his life and be spontaneous, not everything needs planning.

For today’s society being on time is a necessary requirement. Being late is considered rude and undependable. If one wants to be successful he always needs to be right on time or even a few minutes early. This is not only true in business life it is also true for private life. Clocks dictate the everyday life.

The dictations of the clock, starts after birth. Parents try to keep their children on a tight schedule. They get fed at the same time, put down to sleep at the same time and are played with the same time. Most parents believe that introducing a routine into a child’s life early is important for its development. Also their own life is already on a schedule and they have to try to fit the child into it.

Later other activities get introduced to one’s schedule. A big part of a child’s schedule is influenced by school in the next years. Friends and family also need to be part of the schedule. At this age the planning of the day begins. There are more and more things to fit in the schedule while one is growing up.

As an adult one’s schedule is completely fixed. Getting up in the morning, go to work, leaving work and go back home. This is every day’s structure. Friends and family are part of the schedule, too. Meeting the parents for lunch every Sunday and going out with a friend every Friday. Routine dictates the life and this routine only changes, when life changes in a big manner.

Getting married or moving in with the partner can changes one’s routine. Giving birth and raising a child definitely changes one’s routine. Just like the own parents did, one has to fit the child into his own routine and thereby changing it. The cycle of routine begins again.

Some people are fed up with having a tight schedule and a routine. They try to brake free and make a huge change in their life. Moving to another country or leaving the civilization for living in the woods is examples of these changes. Some feel better afterwards but others realize that having a schedule might not be such a bad thing.
